How does the user communicate with the car? All of the touchpoints mean Human Machine Interface, both tangible and digital.
At the HMI team at NIO, I explored and created future user experiences, and determined how these function within our current and future products.
The targets of HMI experience are:
Most of projects are confidential, but here are some recently shipped products that I’be been a part of:
Making decision by deep diving
The interior digital rearview mirror is mainstream to show luxury and technology. However, instead of saying yes or no to have it, we deep-dived into the user scenarios and questioned ourselves: What‘s the value and definition of the digital mirror? Can it improve the digital cockpit experience while considering the timing and cost? What’s the relationship between the SRVM and the rest of the 3 screens in-car?

Thinking through Prototyping
How does the user adjust the seats in up to 24 ways intuitively with the lowest cognitive burden and learning barrier? How to minimize the wasting of time and cost?
By in-house rapid prototyping and iteration instead of relying on vendors, my team came up with a bunch of design concepts in 3 weeks, from the most practical idea adopted immediately, to the most creative one that inspired the next-generation car.
The outcome of this project is not only the problem solving, but the starting to break down the organizational wall to reduce time costs by applying user-centered methodology and approaches.

Make every passenger share equal rights
Utilizing UWB and OMS(Occupant monitoring system), each passenger could be identified with their own profile. And Function Island customizes their experience and keeps the information synchronized.
Wake-up and Goodbye Experience
From welcome to wake-up, traditional entry and exit experience are transformed into more relational and humanised. Designed user first and last contact with the car through the keyfob.
